Meet the 2021
Foundation Scholarship Winners
MMOPA Safety & Education Foundation is thrilled to announce it has awarded
the 2021 S&EF / University of North Dakota scholarships to Carly Shukiar and James Alwin. The Foundation is partnering with UND to help deserving students pursuing degrees in an aviation-related field.
The funds raised during the Convention Friday Night Auction go to funding these scholarships.
The criteria for selection by the UND Scholarship Committee is that the individual is in good academic standing, has a financial need and has an interest in general aviation as a career. In addition, consideration is given to those with strong
extracurricular and volunteer activities. Carly Shukiar returns as our
MMOPA S&EF Scholarship Winner for a second year. She is an academic senior from Thousand Oaks, CA majoring
in Commercial Aviation. She works as an Aerospace Success Center student ambassador and a Piper Aircraft
social media brand ambassador. Carly is also the pilot in command of the Women’s Air Race Classic team and vice president of UND’s Jewish Student Organization. In her free time, Carly loves crafting and DIY projects, as
well as spending time with family and friends.
James Alwin is a rising junior from Oconto, Wisconsin majoring in Unmanned Aircraft Systems with a minor in Engineering Science. He
is president of EAA Chapter 1342, treasurer for the UND RC/UAS Club, and active with the Air Force ROTC program with hopes to commission as a pilot. James’ interest in aviation was sparked by a Young Eagles flight in
5th grade and prompted him to begin his flight training at the age of 13. He remains passionate about EAA Young Eagles, Pilots & Paws, and the Civil
Air Patrol. Following his initial career in the Air Force, he plans to pursue a career in civilian aviation in a flight test position.
Whether attending the convention in person or virtually, during the auction please be generous in helping us make dreams come true for the next generation of aviators.

Junior, Unmanned Aircraft Systems & Minor in Engineering Science
My name is James Alwin, and I am a rising Junior at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. I would first like to express my gratitude and appreciation to every one of you for selecting me to be one of your MMOPA Safety & Education Foundation Scholarship recipients for 2021.
I am in my third year of studies for a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics with a Major in Unmanned Aircraft System Operations. I grew up in northeastern Wisconsin near Green Bay, which is where I got hooked
on flying. My mom signed me up
for several day-long summer camps between my 5th and 6th-grade years of school. One of these camps was an introduction to aviation. We got to
                                                                                                                                                                                                                            26 MMOPA MAGAZINE
