      A TIME TO REFLECT
Romy Shubitowski, OCMS Executive Director
As the year winds down, we are entering the holiday season, a time everyone is cheerful and grateful. It is a time of traditions and gatherings that remind us of the many people and things we hold dear, and the positive impact they have on our lives. During the year, our fast-paced days cause us to take many things for granted. It is during this holiday season we are gifted with time to reflect and be thankful. The traditions during this season make me reflect on how grateful I am for family and friends.
Hopefully, many of you still have some traditions among your family and friends that create a special bond. Traditions keep cherished memories within our hearts for years to come. My family has a Polish tradition none of my siblings like, but after the practice of this tradition, we are glad we still embrace this ritual. This tradition involves breaking pieces of a thin wafer called, “oplatek,” as everyone individually wishes each other aspirations, hopes and dreams for
the new year. Listening to the blessings bestowed upon others makes me realize how everyone wants the best for each other.
It is these memories that create the stories that will be told from generation to generation. My children know that this tradition has been in my family going back to both my parents’ families. This is the season to cherish these moments and realize the blessings of family and friends. We need to remember to carry these good feelings throughout the year and look back on them during the rough days we may encounter.
During this season, take time to relax and regroup for a successful new year. Prepare for 2022, take time for yourself, and positively embrace what the new year brings you. Be thankful every day for everything in your life and make the most of the upcoming year.
Have a blessed and happy new year, Romy
