          Aliya Hines, MD, PhD
PRESIDENT-ELECT CANDIDATE
Aliya Courtney Hines is an Assistant Professor and Vice-Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Department of Dermatology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. Dr. Hines graduated summa cum laude from Hampton University with a BS degree in chemistry, and her passion for the field of chemistry led her to pursue an MD/PhD in pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After finishing the combined degree program, Dr. Hines chose to specialize in Dermatology and completed her residency training in Dermatology at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Hines became interested in access to specialty care for the underserved during her first job out of residency, when she was employed by the only remaining private dermatology practice in the city of Detroit. She subsequently joined the Wayne State Department of Dermatology and through her faculty position as a tele-dermatologist at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, developed a focus on the use of telemedicine to improve access to care. Taking a two-year hiatus from Wayne State to pursue a post-doctoral fellowship in the National Clinician Scholars Program at the University of Michigan, Dr. Hines was able to apply health services research techniques to investigate youth attitudes towards telemedicine and clinical outcomes of telemedicine consultation within the Veterans Health Administration. Using a combination of advocacy and
research, Dr. Hines hopes to expand the use of telemedicine to improve access to care in dermatology and other specialty areas. Dr. Hines currently serves on the State Policy Committee of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Legislative and Judicial Committees of the Michigan State Medical Society and is the immediate past chair of the WCMSSM’s Young Physicians’ Committee.
