Wayne County Sets Precedent at AMA
Congratulations to Tabitha Moses, MS and Clara Hwang, MD who worked jointly to submit Wayne County Resolution 09-20 Medication for Opioid Use Disorder in Physician Health Programs to the Michigan State Medical Society’s House of Delegates.
The MSMS House of Delegates Resolution was submitted to the American Medical Association Annual Meeting in June. The Michigan Delegation advocated on behalf of the resolution and Resolution 212 was adopted as amended by the AMA House of Delegates.

A Trip to Chicago
by Chris Bush, MD
The American Medical Society House of Delegates finally met in person in Chicago in June.
This was the first time there was a “in-person” meeting since the Fall of 2019 when the group convened in San Diego.
Thanks to extraordinary efforts by the Speakers and AMA staff the HOD was able to conduct business virtually during the pandemic.
All attendees were in a joyous mood to finally have an opportunity to see colleagues in person and laugh and joke despite what we all have been through. Nevertheless, there was significant trepidation that the gathering would evolve into a “spreader event”. The safety protocols were well thought out
as individuals were encouraged to do a Covid-19 test before leaving home, shortly after arrival and three days into the meeting.
The work of the House was formidable as many resolutions introduced at previous meetings were deferred to keep the virtual tasks to a manageable level. Those resolutions still considered pertinent were brought forward at this meeting.
I was involved with the Great Lakes States Caucus in a
work group assigned to Reference Committee E. We took positions on the resolutions before us and developed consensus opinions to present to our state delegations. There were many excellent resolutions such as advocating for over-the-counter oral contraceptives, encouraging research of testosterone and
pharmacologic therapies for post-menopausal individuals with decreased libido and informal milk sharing.
Other topics included geriatric polypharmacy, CBD Oil regulation and marketing guardrails for the “over- medicalization” of Cannabis use.
There were many timely and serious issues that were before the House. They were urgent topics such as Gun Violence, the pending repudiation of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court and many concerns by the students and young physicians on the social determinants of health.
This meeting marked the 175th anniversary of the founding of the American Medical Association. Our new AMA President, Jack Resneck, Jr, M.D. had the following to say during his inaugural speech:
“While it would be easy to get overwhelmed by despair, as I begin this new role, I’ve never been prouder of my physician colleagues. I’ve never been prouder of my profession”.
The Michigan Delegation was delighted that Betty Chu, M.D., MBA was reelected to serve on the very important Council
on Medical Service. Her campaign was very ably managed
by Joshua Richmond of Michigan State Medical Society. Another Henry Ford Health physician, Pino Colone, M.D., has announced his candidacy for Vice Speaker with that election to be held in June of 2023. •
