I am asked on many occasions why I have remained active and spent so much of my professional time devoted to working on behalf of our Wayne County Medical Society, Southeast Michigan (WCMSSM), Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA). I know that behind that question there is also the unasked question of “what do these societies do and is it actually worth it?” To put these questions into a deeper context, the real “unfiltered ask” may be more like: “Is the juice worth the squeeze?”
Obviously many things come to mind for me but the most important aspect of belonging and working on behalf of these societies is leadership! Leadership
at first blush may sound a bit trite especially if we,
physicians, think we already have the skills associated with leadership down pat and have already mastered
it. The truth is this, leadership is not a simple skill, it is not acquired from a quick read through a book, it is not something one achieves from a one day CME course but rather--it is one of the most powerful and influential competencies that physicians can have. It is through
the WCMSSM, MSMS and the AMA that physicians can collectively speak truth to power and move the healthcare landscape in directions that benefit the patients we serve while also preserving and protecting our ability to practice the art of medicine. I think it
is safe to say that a lot of what these organizations do on behalf of physicians in the State of Michigan and nationally, will escape most of us if we are not keenly aware of how politics, legislation, and expanding scopes
