Title: Amend Board of Medicine Rules to align with ABMS Policy Changes
Introduced by: Richard E. Burney, MD, for the Washtenaw County Medical Society
Whereas R.338.2443 of the Administrative Rules of the Board of Medicine regarding continuing medical education specify that specialty board certification or recertification may count for 50 hours of CME in the year in which it is achieved, and
Whereas this rule is based on the premise that such board recertification will be based on an examination that is taken at intervals of 5 to 10 years, as prescribed by the applicable specialty board, and
Whereas the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) supports the use of, and encourages state boards to recognize, a licensee’s participation in an ABMS MOC and/or AOA BOS OCC program as an acceptable means of meeting CME requirements for license renewal., and
Whereas the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has adopted new policies regarding renewal of specialty certification moving from a “maintenance of certification” done at five to ten-year intervals to a “continuing certification” model in which to maintain board certification the diplomate will be actively and continuously engaged with the specialty board CME program, and
Whereas this new model of formative continuing medical education is superior to the present summa- tive model, and
