MMOPA Magazine: What led you to move up to the M600?
Muna: Starting in 2016, Jesse Adams at Aerista was very patient since I began by looking for a plane in a different category: single-engine piston, and much older (Bonanza’s around $400,000). As I learned more, it was evident that the safety profile of a turbine, glass panel, and a newer plane was worth the higher price tag. I’m flying two kids around (often through a marine layer) so safety matters to me much more than it used to.
Jesse helped me learn about tax advantages. And when I saw that we can fly nonstop to our manufacturing facility in Waco, Texas, I was sold. I just didn’t know if I could learn to fly it or insure it. Jesse had total confidence and encouraged me that I could get trained in under a year, and he helped me find a great school and instructor (through MMOPA). It took me under three months! He also connected me with great insurance people and it all worked out.
Surprisingly, the M600 isn’t more difficult to fly since it is
so powerful and has more systems (like pressurization). Jesse also helped me figure out hourly costs, which are the lowest among turboprops.
I don’t know how I could find the right plane without a great broker. Jesse didn’t treat me differently because I’m a girl. He took me seriously right from the start. He didn’t talk down
to me because I don’t have much experience. He even figured out when the seller tried to sell the plane to another party, presumably for more money! We had already made a deposit so Jesse got that straightened out, too.
MMOPA Magazine: What do you enjoy most about the M600?
Muna: The M600 power is really cool. It climbs well even at altitude, and then you can still land on pretty short runways. When I get more experience, I plan to fly to a bunch of ski towns. This summer’s vacation will likely be flying from airport to airport in the United States with my teenage kids.
MMOPA Magazine: What’s your training/operating philosophy for ensuring you operate the aircraft in the safest manner possible?
Muna: I prepare a lot. I also make notes on a flashcard for things I’ve learned from a flight. Josh Armbruster (from Wright Aviation) is not just a great CFI, but he’s also fun to fly with.
MMOPA Magazine: What are some of your typical missions?
Muna: We are avid snow skiers, so I often fly from SoCal to Mammoth in the Sierra Nevada’s. I will get around 125 hours this year. I only had around 200 when I bought the plane.
MMOPA Magazine: Do you fly anything besides the PA46? Muna: My son wants to get a kit plane or an old Piper Cub
and do some bush flying. Check back with me in a few years.
MMOPA Magazine: How has MMOPA helped you?
Muna: I read all kinds of stuff regarding insurance trends, training options, new features, but my favorite is to read about flying mishaps. They can be really sad, but I learn
a lot from them.
