COMMITTEE AND TASK FORCE UPDATES
• Membership Committee – Dr. Evelyn Eccles, Chair: Dr. Eccles reviewed the materials that included the April membership assignments and March 31 drops. Following the March Executive Council and Membership Committee meetings, leaders agreed to engage in peer-to- peer communications to encourage renewals and new member sign-ups. This activity supplements the engagement by WCMS
and MSMS.
Dr. Eccles provided the ensuing 2021 cycle membership summary:
Dr. Eccles encouraged the Council to be considering how to increase revenue in light of the membership drop. Ms. Szlenkier underscored how critical peer-to-peer engagement is in promoting the importance of WCMS and MSMS.
• Legislative Committee – Dr. James Mitchiner, Chair: Dr. Mitchiner reminded the committee about upcoming May 10 meeting. Dr. Mitchiner provided an update on the CRNA legislation, House Bill 4359, that passed the Michigan House by a vote of 82-25 which is opposed by WCMS, MSMS, and many other physician stakeholder groups. Rep. Ronnie Peterson was the only legislator from the Washtenaw area that voted against the measure. The bill will move to the Michigan Senate. Discussion on medical malpractice ensued. The new Health Can’t Wait legislation has been introduced, Senate Bill 247, again by Senator VanderWall. Dr. Mitchiner discussed plans to hold quarterly, messaging meetings among the state-wide legislative chairs at the direction of county and MSMS staff. Dr. Mitchiner asked if the Council would like to invite other county chairs to attend WCMS’ Legislative Committee meetings later this year. The Council was in agreement that other chairs may be invited to sit-in, but not participate in discussion as our legislator discussions are unique to this area. Finally, the Council discussed restrictive legislation in surrounding states seeking to limit transgender youth sport participation.
• General Session / Program Task Force – Dr. Evangeline Spindler, Chair. Event ideas include: unionization, a full COVID-19 panel, and physician burnout. The Council agreed to continue with the virtual schedule as drafted for the remainder of 2021, bearing in mind COVID-19 challenges.
MEDICAL STUDENT UPDATE – Jesper provided a written update which was read in his absence. The medical students are looking forward to the MSMS House of Delegates.
