Colleague Reflections
Many colleagues will tell you that Dr. Allen Silbergleit
was an outstanding teacher, surgeon, and member of the medical community. We on the Detroit Medical News editorial board also remember him as a fine writer, medical historian, and raconteur. One story I heard him tell several years ago was about a notorious priest in the Detroit area. Father Coughlin of the Shrine of the Little Flower had a weekly radio program in the 1930s, and in it his broadcasts became more and more Fascist, until they had to be cancelled in 1939.
In the 1970s, Father Coughlin developed heart problems
for which a cardiac consult was requested. The doctor consulted was Dr. Alan Silbergleit. Dr. Silbergleit came
to visit Father Coughlin and, with one look at his name, Father Coughlin immediately launched into a discussion the point of which was that he “never had been anti-Semitic. I was just misunderstood.”
Allen, with characteristic humor, just let the story stop there, with a twinkle in his eye. Needless to say, Coughlin did very well after Dr. Silbergleit’s operation.
