Dr. Allen Silbergleit was a Vascular Surgeon and a Professor of Surgery at Wayne State University, School of Medicine and had over 66 years of experience in the medical field. He graduated from University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine medical school in 1955. In 1965 Allen Silbergleit performed the world’s first successful resection and graft of a ruptured mycotic/tuberculosis abdominal aortic aneurysm.
When he wasn’t busy being a great surgeon, Dr Silbergleit was a member of our Wayne County Medical Society, Southeast Michigan, Detroit Medical News (DMN) Editorial board. Dr Silbergleit and I were colleagues on the Ed Board for many years. I always admired the quiet dignity that he brought to our meetings. In 2018, Dr Silbergleit and I co-wrote an article for the DMN entitled “Celebrating Wayne State University’s Sesquicentennial.” I remember that he was very proud to have had an affiliation with Wayne State University (WSU) and the Detroit Medical Center. He was a true historian and possessed a vast wealth of knowledge about the school of medicine and the medical center. I recall that he was very specific and exacting about any information that he contributed to articles he submitted including the article that we coauthored (he was first author). As we both researched and co-wrote the article, I randomly came across the information above about him being the world’s first surgeon to have done the successful resection and graft of a ruptured aortic aneurysm. He had not shared this information but, there it was, listed in the archives of WSU’s storied history as one of its main historic claims to fame over its many years! Dr Silbergleit was very gracious and modest. I truly respected him for his brilliance and expertise that he would show us in his own way. I will miss him but I know he is in a good place. Dr Silbergleit, you have brought honor and integrity to the medical profession as one of us, may you rest in peace.
