awards scholarships

Eight students from a pool of nationwide applicants were awarded 2018 LEEP Dream Scholarships. These top students, including two repeat winners, were awarded $2,000 college scholarships to encourage their pursuit of law enforcement/public safety careers by the professional public safety of cers of the Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP). Four Michigan residents and students from four other states were honored:
miCHiGAN
Sydney Bleich, of Fruitport, MI, gradu-
ated Fruitport High School with a 3.4 GPA.
Her father, Rick Bleich, is a retired Mus-
kegon Police veteran and retired Police Of-
 cers Labor Council (POLC) Executive Com-
mittee Chairman. As Robotics Team Lead
Programmer, she taught children program-
ming and Cyber Security basics. She attended job shadows, confer- ences and created an Internet Security website. She was on the Equestrian Team, Horse Judging Team, Spanish Club, choir and 4-H Vice President and Secretary. As Vice President and Chairperson of Leo Club, she volunteered in the community. She is pursuing a  ve- year dual bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics at Saint Mary’s College and Computer Engineering at University of Notre Dame. She plans to apply to the FBI Academy computer forensics program and pursue a career in Cyber Security.
Hunter Bowerson, of Marysville, MI,
graduated Marysville High School with a
3.6 GPA. He has family members in the
military and serving as police of cers, in-
cluding his dad Clinton Bowerson, a 23-year
Chester eld Township Police Of cer and
POLC member. He’s Captain of Michigan Ice
Hawks Hockey Team, a youth hockey team
mentor, instructor, assistant coach and certi ed Level 1 USA Hockey referee of cial. He received three Regional Stick titles and was part of District Championship teams. He took three AP classes, received an Academic Award, a Viking OAR Award for being top student in his nutrition class and was a Marysville Spirit Committee member, organizing fundraisers, parades, prom and homecoming. He plans to use his LEEP grant to pursue a bachelor’s in
business at Western Michigan University and a career in federal law enforcement.

The former Metro Law Enforcement Explorer completed: Muskegon Area Career Tech Center Criminal Justice Program; Muskegon Citizen’s Police Academy; and Michigan State Police Student Trooper program. He received All Academic Soccer, Football and Track honors. The Var- sity Soccer Team Captain was awarded MVP, All District, All Region and All Conference. He applied to Michigan State Trooper Academy and plans to become a Police Of cer.
marybeth Gormley, of Attica, MI, is
using her second LEEP grant to pursue a
Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree at Oak-
land University. Her uncle, Jeff Gormley is
a Bloom eld Township Police Lieutenant
and POLC Executive Committee member.
The Honors College student received a 4.0
GPA the  rst year of college and partici-
pates in volunteer leadership activities, volunteering with Paradise Animal Rescue. The North Branch High School graduate was Class President, Student Council Corresponding Secretary, Women’s Cross- Country Captain, Band Letter Club President and Marching Band Section Leader. She earned a Cross-Country Varsity Award and was active in Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Drama Club, Quiz Bowl and National Honor Society. She hosted dinners and fundraisers for the homeless through Trinity United Methodist Church Youth Group. She is taking foreign language and a logic course to prepare for a career in the FBI.
